Caroline Richardson, Max's mother, will (hopefully) be leaving for Haiti in a few weeks to help provide medical care during this time of crisis. Knowing how much our class loves origami, Caroline has asked Max to head a class project: making colorful origami containers that Caroline will be able to fill with candy or small treats, and give to the children she'll be working with in Haiti. We are using the modular origami that Jesse taught us to make lots of folded box sides, which will travel well, and which Caroline can assemble when she unpacks her suitcase.
The children are very excited about this project, and rightly so. Origami is something they love, and the gift they are sending has real value in their eyes. I know the other SK classes are contributing to the Haitian relief effort in their own way; some may even be sending other gifts along with Caroline; but this is our way. Many thanks to Caroline for allowing us to send something so personal with her!
Here is the box we are filling with origami pieces. Each of these colored lines is a square composed of three origami papers folded around each other. Unpacked and rearranged, each little square will make a three-dimensional hollow shape that can be filled with small treats.
